Heads-Up: New Email Status Labels in Apollo

apollo updates use apollo like a pro Jun 09, 2025

If you’re working through the course and uploading your own contact lists into Apollo, you’ll want to be aware of an upcoming change to how email status is displayed.

Starting June 16, Apollo is updating the way it labels email addresses. It’s a small shift, but it’s important to understand—especially if you’re following along step-by-step or using a free Apollo plan.

Here’s what’s changing:

New Email Status Labels

Currently, some emails are automatically labeled “Verified” if Apollo has a matching address in its database—even if you haven’t used a credit to verify it.

Beginning June 16, that’s changing. You’ll start seeing three updated labels for emails in your contact list:

  • Verified – You’ve manually enriched this email using credits. It’s been validated by Apollo.

  • User Managed – You (or your team) uploaded this email, and it hasn’t been verified.

  • Needs Verification – Apollo can verify this email, but you haven’t done it yet.

Any contact you upload after the update will be labeled User Managed by default.

What This Means for You

If you're following along in the course and your account is already showing the new labels—or if you're watching this after June 16—just know that these changes are expected.

You may also notice that some of your existing contacts, which were previously labeled Verified, will be reclassified as User Managed. That’s intentional—Apollo is updating these records to reflect the new logic. As a one-time courtesy, they’ll re-verify affected contacts for you automatically (no credits needed).

A Note for Free Plan Users

If you’re using a free Apollo plan, you get 100 email enrichment credits per month. After this change, no email will be marked Verified unless you manually choose to enrich it by clicking Access Email and spending a credit.

So be thoughtful about how you use your credits:

  • Focus on leads you’re actively reaching out to

  • Don’t enrich every email in a big list “just in case”

  • Use the User Managed label to do a bit of manual vetting before spending a credit

This update won’t affect any of your saved filters, sequences, or workflows—just the way email status is labeled and displayed.

Direct from Apollo

Here’s what Apollo says about the update:

“We’re making a change to how Apollo displays email verification status on contact records. This update ensures labels more accurately reflect the source and enrichment status of each email address and will be launched on June 16th.

What’s changing:
Previously, some contacts uploaded or synced into Apollo were automatically labeled as Verified if their emails matched those already present in Apollo’s database, without you needing to request this enrichment verification. Going forward:

  • All emails uploaded or synced by your team will be labeled User Managed.

  • Only once you actively select to verify the email using email credits, it will be validated directly by Apollo and be labeled as Verified.

  • We’re updating your existing contact records to reflect this change, meaning some of your previously labeled contacts as Verified might now be labeled as User Managed.

This update is being made to improve clarity (not because data was incorrect) and does not impact your existing workflows. As a one-time courtesy, we’ll enrich any impacted contacts at no cost to you.”
